Welcome to Orolas
Where am I?
The world of Orolas is a fantasy landscape that exists on an average planet in the "Goldilocks Zone" of a distant sun. It has many natural terrains, oceans and seas, plus there are seasonal changes to keep it dynamic. It should remind you of our own home planet, minus the people and politics. It is a world full of wilderness challenges, dangers, and lethal hazards awaiting the intrepid explorer, or the aspiring conqueror. The regions and territories described here are clean backdrops against which your own imagination can run wild. This world is described in this system agnostic Gazeteer, and is ready to be explored. Any of it's continents, regions, oceans, jungles, rivers, mountains, and lake basins can be used as the location for your own adventures or stories.
How is this useful?
Each continental zone has it's own prototypical environment, with a few unique features and traits, but they should all feel relatively familiar to any fantasy reader or RPG Gamemaster. With most commercial campaign settings, the author typically determines what kind of beasts hunt where, who lives in what populated areas, and often expounds on what kind of governments, religions, races, and types of holidays they recognize. Specialized classes, feats, weapons, magic and other dressings are also inserted to create plots and intrigues among the inhabitants. In other words, the physical setting creates the context and foundation of everything that is built upon it. Without apology, you will find none of that cultural overlay here. Instead, wide open spaces are described in detail, with seeds of potential adventures scattered around to easily use in your own stories. In this way, a storyteller does not need to strip away another author's cultural trappings to create their own starting place. This open world is just waiting for you to move in, bringing your own imagination and ideas to this black box theater.
- Other examples of adventure settings
- System agnostic setting
Bring your own friends, factions, rules, and foes. This campaign setting is primarily designed to be a resource for Storytellers or Game Masters of any arbitrary role-playing game system. It is designed to be flexible, familiar, and fun for a wide variety of play. It can also be a great place to visit every now and then to soak up a little friendly advice, find fresh inspiration, and even crib some notes for something entirely different of your own invention. It can also be a supplement to any other system, there is no need to use it exclusively. Simply overlay your own favorite and familiar bestiary, drop in pins fir your own cities, villages and farms, or perhaps craft ancient temples to infernal beings hoarding frightening power and precious treasure high in the mountains.
- Open world that is ready to place any kind of adventures
Orolas encloses diverse climates and ecosystems suitable to host adventures, fictional stories, and storytelling backdrops. Some lands are green pastoral plains with forests and lakes, while others are filled with challenging mountains, weather, and dangers from all sides. Experience a sweeping world of mountains, caves, forests, underground rivers, plains, islands, beaches, and much more. There are also places that can be made more mysterious, dark, corrupted, or diseased. A forest becomes cursed by how it is described in narration, not so much by what actually grows and lives there.
Welcome and Beware!
This could be the first step on your wildest adventures yet. By exploring the open world of Orolas, you are sure to find a rich environment to play out adventures, enjoy stories and lore, or perhaps learn a little something about living in a setting that thinks you might be delicious roasted on a spit.
How this project can be used:
- Inspiration and ideas for your own adventures.
- World setting as-is for your own RPG campaign.
- Models and examples of creative storytelling to learn different strategies.
